You may have heard at least once in your life about a disease called athlete’s foot. This also has the name of tinea pedis and it is a medical condition that shows up when the skin of your feet is infected by different types of fungi. The discomfort may be present between the toes and on the sides of your feet. It is a very contagious infection, so it is very important for you to notice if there are any symptoms and get the right treatment in order to avoid the disease to spread.
Causes & Prevention
In most of the cases, Athlete’s Foot can be contracted if you came in contact with a person who was infected. This is why you should never wear somebody’s shoes or try on shoes in a shop without socks on.
Moreover, it is very important not to walk barefoot in public spaces, like pools or public showers. This infection spreads faster in wet areas, so you should be very, very careful.
Besides this, you have to properly choose your shoes. They have to have ventilation in order to make sure that your feet do not sweat, since this is a factor that contributes to the fungus spreading.
Washing your feet in warm water should become a daily routine. You can buy a foot spa that may be used at home. There are products with good prices that will offer your feet the care they need.
At first, this infection may have no symptoms if it is not severe. A lot of people do not consider the fact that, if the skin on their feet is dry, it may be an infection, not just dehydration. But then, after the infection spreads, the skin starts itching, burning and stinging.
If the infection is severe, there may be fissures, pain, and cracks present. You have to immediately see a doctor if it gets worse, since the condition may become more severe and can spread to other parts of your body.
The treatment of this medical issue depends on its causes. The first thing that you have to do is to always keep your feet dry and clean. Usually, the first options are medications for fungus infections, such as clotrimazole, ketoconazole or miconazole. However, if the infection is severe, these treatments are not enough to kill it.
Clotrimazole, for example, will only make the symptoms disappear, but it is not strong enough to make the infection go away for good. Instead, a more powerful substance is isoconazole nitrate, but you should never use it without consulting your doctor, because this substance can be harmful if used for a very long time. So, the best way to get rid of athlete’s foot is to check a doctor. If you do not treat it well, the symptoms may disappear, but not the infection. In some weeks it may come back. It takes up to 4 weeks for it to disappear completely. So, a treatment should not last 3 or 4 days, but a month.
